When I was little, I wanted to be an astronaut. I had no idea I’d be a singer instead. I could carry a tune, but I never thought I could sing professionally. But that’s one of the coolest things about God: Even when we don’t know what’s in our future, God does.
Take my mom, for example. She’s had a really tough life. She got pregnant out of wedlock when she was 16. She got married and had her first baby at 17. She was divorced a few years later. She wasn’t a Christian until she met my Dad.
I look at her life and sometimes I think, How could any good come out of all that?
Mom always tells me that despite her bad decisions, she has, by God’s grace, learned much and grown a lot. That baby might have seemed like a “mistake” to someone else, but he is a gift from God. I’m sure it wasn’t God’s plan for my mom to have a baby out of wedlock, but he’s used that baby—my brother—in many ways. My brother has made mistakes, but he’s really living for God and it’s clear that God has never taken his hand off him.
It just goes to show that God always knows what he’s doing—even when we don’t know what we’re doing. Or when we make mistakes.
God has a plan for each of us. We may not always understand his plan, but we still need to be obedient as we try to fulfill it.
How do we do that? The prophet Micah asked the same thing: “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).
God’s plan is for us to be faithful to him in everything we do. The plan is not that you become a doctor, a missionary, a singer or even an astronaut. Those are just the details. The big plan is to follow him in all we do.
I have a friend who plays basketball. I told him, “You know what? It doesn’t matter how many three-pointers you hit. God doesn’t look at that. What matters is how much you seek God and how you share his love with the people you meet, no matter where you are or what you’re doing.”
That’s what I’m trying to do with my life—to trust God completely, and walk with him every single day.
Jacquelyn Davette Velasquez (yep, that’s her full name) says her favorite meal is “my mom’s green chili chicken cheese casserole—it’s the best!“
